Have you ever watched that show on the Discovery Channel? Man vs. Wild? It is so fricken addictive, it's not even funny. Last night I found myself searching feverishly for upcoming episodes so that I could fill up my DVR with hours of good fun survival strategies. Ya know - in case I ever get dropped in the middle of Iceland and have to scale glaciers to find my way home.
The basic premise of the show is that this guy, Bear Grylls, gets dropped (literally, he parachutes in from a plane) in the middle of some EXTREME terrain, with only a water-bottle, a flint, and a knife, and basically has to use his survival skills to get himself out alive.
At first, I was watching because I thought Bear was hunky, and slightly charming with his British accent. That is, until I watched the episode where he found a dead mountain goat, cut out it's eyeballs, and ate them (for protein). Angie tells me that there is another episode (which I have yet to see) where he pees on his shirt and ties it around his head to cool himself down, and later comments on how much it smells. I gotta say, Bear - you're probably not winning many points with the ladies! Or the camera guy, for that matter!
However, his pronunciation of the words glacier (glah-seer) and vitamin (vitt-min) more than make up for any of the gross things he has to do.
But I gotta admit, he's clever! Much cooler than MacGyver! From watching the show, I have basically come to terms with the fact that if faced with an extreme survival situation, I'd pretty much be a goner. I base this conclusion solely on the fact that I can't even walk through doorways without breaking toes, and the fact that you will never ever ever (in a million years) find me eating the eyeballs of a dead mountain goat.
But considering where I take my vacations, I'm not thinking I will be utilizing any of my newly learned survival skillz anytime soon. I'm pretty sure the only skill necessary to survive on the beaches of Florida is the skill to wave down the cabana boy to bring me another margarita!
Watch the show! It rocks!
